WRITER WITH A CRYSTAL BALL MEETS A DIRECTOR WITH A LACK OF VISION TO CREATE THE ULTIMATE THEATRICAL AND TAILGATING EXPERIENCE

Black and Gold by Popular Demand -- Ain't Dat Super! Ultimate Theatrical and Tailgating Experience is back!

October 28, 2010 – New Orleans, LA – One year ago, in September 2009, Steven Scaffidi sat down with his wife over Margarita’s at Casa Garcia and told her that he wanted to write a story about the New Orleans Saints going to the Super Bowl.  He went on to say, “Honey, can you imagine two brothers, very special brothers, walking into a mid-city bar the morning of the Super Bowl and claiming that they are the reason the Saints got to the big game? In fact, they claim that they have been part of the team’s history since day one!”

Well, Scaffidi’s wife, Ana, not only thought she married a crazy man but she reminded him that it was only the 2nd week of the season and the Saint’s have not been to the Super Bowl in their 44 year history.  Not to be deterred, Scaffidi sat down in his favorite coffee shop the next day and began writing his story.  On February the 8th, 2010 he wrote the final words of their book, “Final Score: New Orleans 31, Indianapolis 17…Ain’t Dat Super!”, and sent the manuscript off to a publisher.  Less than 3 months later, “Ain’t Dat Super!” was in print and for sale with major retailers like Barnes and Nobel as well as locals such as Octavia Books and the Black and Gold Shop.

As crazy as this story is, it gets even better after Scaffidi met with popular actor and radio talk show host John “Spud” McConnell.  At this coffee shop meeting Scaffidi tells Spud that he has an idea to turn his story into a stageplay and would he be interested in playing the role of the younger brother “Matty”.  Spud knew that Scaffidi was an established writer of screenplays but had no idea that he was also a playwright as well and suggested that he would be interested if Scaffidi brought stage director Perry Martin into the project.  Scaffidi agreed and set up one more coffee shop meeting, this time to meet Martin and pitch him the idea of bringing “Ain’t Dat Super!” to the stage.

The first meeting between Mr. Scaffidi and Mr. Martin was about as strange as the series of events leading up to this moment, because when Scaffidi extended his hand to shake with Martin and he got no reaction, that’s when Scaffidi discovered that Martin is legally blind.  Immediately after that meeting, Scaffidi called Spud and exclaimed, “He’s blind! How can I work with a blind director?  You must be joking!”  Well, it was no joke and 4 months later Scaffidi and Martin teamed up with Spud McConnell and an ensemble of the finest actors in the region to bring “Ain’t Dat Super!” to the Mahalia Jackson Theatre on Labor Day Weekend where it played for several thousand people over 3 days.

The story of “Ain’t Dat Super!” is no different than the story of the New Orleans Saints journey to the Super Bowl…it’s magical.  The story is about believing in something so much that anything is possible.  Now that the Saints are struggling, this story has become even more relevant, and as Scaffidi’s “Creed of a Die Hard Fan” states: “I WILL NEVER STOP BELIEVING!”

Scaffidi and Martin are determined to carry the Saints to another championship and with the help of the never-say-die fans of New Orleans, that’s exactly what’s going to happen on Saturday, November 13th when “Ain’t Dat Super!” returns to the Mahalia Jackson Theatre by popular demand.  The big event starts at noon with a tailgate party in the parking lot of the Mahalia Jackson Theatre followed by two shows at 3pm and 8pm.  This hilarious event is an interactive experience from start to finish and will take the audience on a wild ride through Saints’ history.  This ain’t no ordinary occasion!  Order your tickets now at aintdatsuper.com or call 1-888-946-4839.

A play called 'Ain't Dat Super' captures the true Who Dat spirit
By Bradley Troll
The Times Picayune

It begins with the tailgate party, complete with live music and joyously raucous fans donned in black and gold and beer in hand. Then, the crowds pour in with a surge of rambunctious energy and fill the seats, pausing only to answer the call of the occasional outburst of “Who Dat!” from elsewhere in the crowd. Elated still from their beloved Saints' Super Bowl win, the fan's minds are teeming with the possibilities of a new season, and their excitement is palpable.  Read More

Ain't Dat Super! at Mahalia Jackson Theatre
By Alan Smason
New Orleans Performing Arts Examiner

"In many ways "Ain't Dat Super" is a big wet, sloppy kiss to the hometown heroes New Orleans Saints. It plays to an audience that is as much a part of the show as the actors on stage. Adapted from the novel of the same title by Steven Scaffidi and Nick Gambino, the play is the result of efforts by the authors to turn Saints fever into theatrical spectacle."

HOUMA TODAY - New Orleans Saints-themed play serves as a kick off to upcoming season
By Thad Angelloz, Staff Writer

HOUMA — Thanks to a group of local theater lovers, New Orleans Saints fans can enjoy the Super Bowl experience again in a completely different arena: a playhouse.

In the spirit of honoring south Louisiana’s hometown team, Lockport’s Bayou Playhouse director Perry Martin has teamed up with Steven Scaffidi to present “Ain’t Dat Super!: A Black and Gold Comedy” on Labor Day weekend at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in downtown New Orleans.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Sept. 3 and 4, and 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at the New Orleans theater, 801 N. Rampart St.

Scaffidi, who co-wrote a book by the same title with Nick Gambino, tells the story of twin brothers and Saints die-hards, Bubby and Matty.

What makes the book, which is now on sale, ironic, according to Scaffidi, is the fact that it was born four months before the Saints won the Super Bowl.  Read More

DAVE DIXON WAS JUST “DAT SUPER!” MAN

New Orleans, LA – August 12, 2010 – Where would the city of New Orleans, not to mention their favorite football team, be if not for the Louisiana Superdome? Some say it looks like an alien spacecraft landed here, others say that they like its unique appearance because it represents this unique city, or that it was their shelter during the storm. No matter what you think, it has become a landmark fixture for this great city since it’s creation in 1975 by a man named Dave Dixon. Dixon passed away Sunday, August 8th, at his home in New Orleans at the age of 87. In commemoration of a man who almost single handedly brought the NFL and the Dome to the Crescent City, “Ain’t Dat Super!” a tailgating extravaganza and hilarious play focusing on Saints’ history, which is set to perform Labor Day weekend at the Mahalia Jackson, would like to dedicate the event to someone who had faith in the New Orleans team since the very beginning.

“Ain’t Dat Super!” is especially poignant in terms of Dixon’s life. In a play that focuses on two crazy brothers who claim that they were there at every significant moment in black and gold football history, Dixon was certainly there on the sidelines ever since the very beginning. Nicknamed the “father of professional football in New Orleans,” he was the driving force behind the New Orleans team and the Superdome. People thought he was crazy when he suggested the idea, many feeling a baseball team was needed instead. Even years after the Dome was created many thought Dave was still crazy, considering that the team was affectionately called the most unfortunate team in professional football history. Nonetheless, the play is about believing in the impossible according to native New Orleanian Steven Scaffidi, who wrote the book which the play is based on with Nick Gambino: “Things happen for a reason. The right place and the right time and bang, magic happens. I believe that’s what the play is really about: Believing in the unbelievable.” The event is also set to be a very unique experience by combining a tailgating party before each show, something which Scaffidi is sure Dixon could identify with when Steve says, “I love this whole thing. I like doing things that have never been done before or I like pushing the envelope and being unique. I don’t think anything as crazy as this has ever been done before!” Except of course, when Dixon, a one-of-a-kind guy, decided to put a Superdome in the middle of the city.

So what better way to honor Dave Dixon than a fantastic celebration of all that he started with the ultimate theatrical and tailgating experience that remembers every step of our favorite team’s journey to bringing home the championship? This labor day weekend, September 3rd, 4th, and 5th is your chance to be there with Dixon for every moment in Black and gold history starring local favorites John “Spud” McConnell, Randy Cheramie, and Becky Allen in “Ain’t Dat Super!” The play begins at 8pm on Friday and Saturday and at 2pm on Sunday. Tailgating with great food from Deanie’s, beer from Budweiser, and awesome music from the Topcats, Imaginary Frenz, and the Boogie Men begins two hours prior to showtime. Order your tickets now at aintdatsuper.com or call 1-888-946-4839.

LIVE MUSIC WILL HAVE YOU SAYING, “AIN’T DAT SUPER!”

New Orleans, LA – August 10, 2010 – When naming what makes a great tailgating
experience, one of the first things that come to mind is great music. Well, when
it comes to the ultimate tailgating experience this Labor Day weekend at the
Mahalia Jackson Theatre, we’ve got the best live bands in town! But what could
this amazing music and tailgating be for? To get ready for the ultimate
theatrical celebration of our boys in black and gold in the play “Ain’t Dat
Super!” So come and kick off the new season with some awesome music, great food
from Deanie’s Seafood and other vendors, and the most exciting event to hit this
town since our boys in black and gold brought home the championship!

On Friday, September 3rd, two hours before the play begins at 8pm, we’ll kick
off the celebration with the Boogie Men, a nine-piece dance band that have you
jiving all night long and reliving the bygone days of “Big Band” music and Louis
Armstrong. If this isn’t your keg of Budweiser, they’ll also have you getting
down to today’s most popular tunes and everything in between. The Boogie Men are
as versatile as it gets! How could it not be when you have nine talented
musicians, including a bassist, guitarist, a flute player, a range of saxes, and
who knows what other surprises?

The following day, Saturday September 4th, the Imaginary Frenz will be
performing a super show! Their song list includes many throwbacks to the 80’s,
among other musical eras. Oscar, Tim, Chris, and Steve have been performing
together for over fifteen years in the swamps of New Jersey and the swamps of
New Orleans. This high-energy acoustic band will have you wanting to see your
Imaginary Frenz more often!

Lastly, the Topcats will close out the tailgating extravaganza on Sunday,
September 5th, two hours before the show starts at 2pm. There is no doubt that
the Topcats, nicknamed the “hardest working band in the New Orleans area,” will
have you saying “Ain’t Dat Super!” Their credentials tell you how talented these
guys are. In January of 2009, they were chosen “New Orleans’ Best” in a reader’s
poll in New Orleans Magazine. They are also inductees in the Louisiana Music
Hall of Fame and one of the most popular cover bands, winning numerous awards.

The Boogie Men, Imaginary Frenz, and Topcats aren’t the only amazing local
entertainers lined up for the ultimate theatrical and tailgating experience. The
play stars favorites John “Spud” McConnell and Randy Cheramie as two die-hard
Saints fans claiming they got their team to the championship game. “Ain’t Dat
Super!” also stars favorites Becky Allen and Dane Rhodes. Native New Orleanian
Steven Scaffidi, in partnership with Nick Gambino, wrote “Ain’t Dat Super!” four
months before New Orleans’ Favorite Team made it to the big game! If you can be
as clairvoyant as Scaffidi and Gambino, then you’ll want to be at the ultimate
celebration this Labor Day weekend! Order your tickets online at

ONE MAN’S JOURNEY FROM “FORGOTTEN ON THE BAYOU” TO “AIN’T DAT SUPER!”

August 5, 2010 – New Orleans, LA – On August 27th and August 29th, in commemoration of the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the Weather Channel and local New Orleans Channel Fox 8 plan to broadcast New Orleans documentarian, Steven Scaffidi’s, award winning film “Forgotten on the Bayou: Rockey’s Mission to the White House.” The documentary follows Rockey Vaccarella who not only survived Katrina by hanging onto a rope for four hours, but also towed his FEMA trailer to Washington D.C in order to speak with President Bush.  Rockey’s story is about believing in one’s dreams, in hope, and in resiliency against all odds.

Steven Scaffidi, who documented Rockey’s journey, shares the same belief systems about faith and hope found in the film. He knew that the Weather Channel was a major opportunity for mainstream distribution of the film. As Steve says, “Lo and behold, I get a phone call that it’s going to be a primetime special on August 27! It was a break. Keep plugging away and you’ll eventually get a break.” Continuing with Scaffidi’s “everything happens for a reason” mantra, his newest project which was written with Nicholas Gambino, is a book turned play titled “Ain’t Dat Super!” It is a celebration of what is possible when we refuse to give up. That’s right, we’re talking about the history of the New Orleans football team bringing home the Championship! “Ain’t Dat Super!” is a comedic story about persevering against all odds. The play follows two brothers on the night of the championship game when they walk into a Mid-City Bar and start spinning tales about how they personally got the team to the game. The play stars local favorites John “Spud” McConnell, Randy Cheramie, Becky Allen, and Dane Rhodes. It was written over four months before New Orleans Favorite Team won. Was it coincidence or divine intervention? We’re not sure, but what we do know is that the play is about bringing together an incredible city for the ultimate theatrical and tailgating experience on Labor Day Weekend.

Scaffidi, as can be seen in his documentary on the Weather Channel and Fox 8, is very interested in bringing this city together, “I want the Ain’t Dat Super! audience to be the fans in the stands. I want them to be part of the play. After this experience, I want people hugging and high-fiving.” This hilarious event is an interactive experience from start to finish September 3rd, 4th, and 5th. From tailgating two hours prior to each show (music TBA soon) at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre to wondering what is actual Saints history or folklore during the show, this show ain’t no ordinary occasion! Ain't Dat Super! part of Labor Day weekend tailgating party
Written by Karissa Kary | Thursday, 22 July 2010 07:57 | Saints News

New Orleans, LA - Kick off the 2010 football season with the most exciting event to hit this city since the Saints won the Super Bowl. This Labor Day weekend, September 3-5, you will have the opportunity to relive the excitement of Super Bowl XLIV like never before. Imagine a huge tailgating event in Armstrong Park featuring great food, cold beer and live music. After that, imagine going over to the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts to see the wildest play about football to ever hit the stage.

This ain’t no ordinary play! “Ain’t Dat Super!” centers around two brothers, Bubby and Matty, who walk into a bar the day of the Super Bowl and claim that they are the reason the Saints got to the big game. In fact, the brothers claim that they have been there for every moment is Saints’ history since day one! These two brothers are not your ordinary die-hard fans, and as they spin their incredible story they encounter curious local characters who desperately try to poke holes in their unbelievable tale. While everyone is trying to figure out what’s real and what’s barroom lore, the audience members become part of the story and actually turn out to be the fans in the stands in this interactive play that follows the history of the team from the beginning all the way through their incredible Super Bowl victory.

“Ain’t Dat Super!” stars Louisiana native John “Spud” McConnell, who recently portrayed Huey P. Long in the Off-Broadway hit “The Kingfish” and Ignatius J. Reilly in the theater adaptation of “A Confederacy of Dunces.”  New Orleans favorites Becky Allen and Randy Cheramie round out this all-star cast. The play is based on local writer/filmmaker Steven Scaffidi’s book of the same name, which he started writing four months before the Super Bowl. Is this a story of Divine Inspiration? Who knows? But we do know that hell had to freeze over for the Saint’s to win the Super Bowl just as hell had to freeze over for Bubby and Matty to get past the Pearly Gates. The play begins at 8:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and at 3:00 pm on Sunday. Tickets are available for purchase at aintdatsuper.com or by calling 1-888-946-4839.
